The expiration timeline will depend from registrar to registrar, but in general in it works like this:
- Expiration Date: Registrar attempts to auto-renew your domain. If that fails (auto-renewal is not enabled or you don’t have enough money on your credit card), you will get an email notification (on the email you used to register with GoDaddy, not the custom email).
- 5th Day: Another attempt to renew your domain. If it fails, the domain is parked. The DNS gets interrupted and both your website AND email stop working.
- 12th Day: Another (3rd) renewal attempt and another email notification if it fails.
- 19th Day: Domain becomes inactive and is put on hold.
- 26th Day: Domain goes to a domain auction,
- 30th Day: Domain is listed at a domain auction. Without active bids it stays as Expired in your account.
- 36th Day: If there are no bids or backorders, the domain goes to a Final Closeout Auction.
- 41st Day: Auctions end.
- 42nd Day: Domain gets removed from your account and goes back to the domain registry.
